Portland voters in 2017 approved a $64 million “Building for our Future” (BFOF) bond to renovate four of the city’s public elementary schools. Official groundbreaking ceremonies and a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled over the next two weeks mark the latest milestone in the renovation work.

Students at Lyseth Elementary School returned to a newly renovated building this fall. An official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will be held on Thursday, October 28, at 2:30 p.m. to celebrate. The outdoor event is open to the public.

Construction work on the three other BFOF elementary schools – Reiche, Presumpscot and Longfellow  – is underway. Ceremonial groundbreaking events will take place this week and next, with the schedule as follows:

REICHE COMMUNITY SCHOOL: Thursday, October 21, 2 p.m.

PRESUMPSCOT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Friday, October 22, 2 p.m.

LONGFELLOW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Friday, October 29, at 1 p.m.

The Portland Public Schools is Maine’s largest school district, with 6,500 students, and is also the most diverse. About one-third of the district’s students come from homes where languages other than English are spoken—a total of more than 60 languages. 52 percent of the district’s students are white and 48 percent are students of color. Approximately half of PPS students qualify for free or reduced-price school meals.
