 | PPS Students Write to Kids in Ukraine Posted on 05/24/2022 Letters of hope to the children of Ukraine, penned by Lincoln Middle School students, took flight on a plane last week for delivery to children in the war zone. The student missives were part of a letter-writing campaign called Operation Hope, whose organizers are now inviting students from other schools in Portland and beyond to write inspiring messages to be delivered to their counterparts in Ukraine.

 | PHS Student Receives Step Up Award Posted on 05/20/2022 Luzia Vumpa is the 2022 recipient of the Portland High School Step Up Award, now in its 5th year. The Step Up Award provides funding for students in the Make It Happen! program who would otherwise have to forego school-year extracurricular opportunities in order to work after school and/or on weekends. Luzia, a rising junior at Portland High School, will receive $1,250 per semester until graduation for her last two years of high school.

 | CBHS Holds 13th Graduation Ceremony Posted on 06/04/2021 Casco Bay High School held its 13th graduation exercises on Thursday, June 3, at Merrill Auditorium. As has been true of all CBHS commencement ceremonies, the event was a mix of traditional pomp and circumstance and the unconventional. For example, Principal Derek Pierce did a cha-cha dance on the stage in the middle of his graduation remarks and the Class of 2021 followed suit.

 | PHS Holds 200th Commencement Ceremony Posted on 06/03/2021 Portland High School, one of the oldest operating public high schools in the United States, held its 200th graduation exercises on Thursday, June 3, at Merrill Auditorium. Although everyone wore masks to protect against COVID-19, the Class of 2021 celebrated being able to hold the historic ceremony in person at the beautiful venue. Last year, graduation was a drive-in event, due to restrictions on large gatherings during the pandemic.

She won for her research on how carbon nanotubes could be used as an inexpensive remover of arsenic in drinking water systems.

 | Board Condemns LGBTQ+ Hate Crimes Posted on 02/02/2021 The Portland Board of Public Education at its Feb. 2 meeting unanimously approved a resolution condemning hate crimes targeting LGBTQ+ community members. The resolution was prompted by a spate of recent hate crimes in which Portland and South Portland residents received dangerous and threatening letters in the mail. The Board pledged its solidarity with LGBTQ+ students, staff and families and committed itself to “creating a culture of allyship” by rooting out homophobia in schools and including learning about LGBTQ+ history, culture, and identity in the curriculum.

 | PPS Evaluating School Renovation Options Posted on 02/18/2020 City voters in 2017 approved a $64 million “Buildings for our Future” (BFOF) bond to renovate four of the city’s public elementary schools. Three years later, work on one school, Lyseth, is on track for completion next year. However, rising construction costs mean that the amount of money in the bond is no longer sufficient to renovate the four schools on the scale originally envisioned. The Lyseth project, currently underway, has been scaled back due to the cost constraints, and the district must now consider options for rebuilding the remaining three schools.
