Two Portland High School athletes were recently recognized for their
talents, both on and off the field, by The Forecaster and the Maine
Sunday Telegram newspapers.
Senior Madison Bolduc was recognized
by The Forecaster as the PHS Female Athlete of the Fall for her
outstanding play on the soccer pitch, as she helped lead the Lady
Bulldogs to one of their most successful seasons in several years. Coach
Arthur Mosen called her, “a quiet player who never seeks any kind of
spotlight, but she's deserving of praise due to her character and
willingness to lead by example." Madison was awarded the Bulldog Award
this fall, given to the player who showed all the qualities of a true
teammate throughout the season: compassion, commitment and the desire to
play for something more than themselves. Along with her talent on the
soccer field, Madison is also a member of the PHS indoor and outdoor
track teams, the Key Club and the yearbook staff.
Jeremiah
Israel-Copeland was recognized as The Forecaster's PHS Male Athlete of
the Fall, and as a first-team member of the Maine Sunday Telegram's
Class of the State football team. As a defensive tackle, center and
guard, Jeremiah was the anchor of a gridiron defense that was one of the
top in the state this fall. PHS football coach Jim Hartman called
Jeremiah, “our mainstay on defense this season. Everything we did
revolved around him. He's a good kid and a hard worker." Jeremiah was a
constant presence around the ball, and his tireless work ethic was a
trademark of his leadership and an example for his teammates to follow.
Jeremiah has also found success on the wrestling and outdoor track
teams.
