Kathy Truong, a Portland High School junior, recently was commissioned to create a one-of-a-kind art piece for a silent auction at the Charity Summit event at Sugarloaf Mountain on Jan. 24.

She created the piece highlighting Sugarloaf‘s beloved characters, Amos the Moose, Blueberry the Bigelow Bear and Pierre – named for the logger who helped cut the first trails at the ski resort. The annual event raises money for two nonprofits, the Maine Cancer Foundation in Falmouth and Martha B. Webber Breast Cancer Center in Farmington. This year more than $200,000 was raised. The winning bid for Kathy Truong’s piece was $375.

“Kathy, who has achieved local prominence as a very gifted portrait artist, has created a number of art pieces for display at PHS and student art shows, but this was Kathy’s first public sale of one of her pieces,” said PHS Assistant Principal Kathleen Marquis-Girard. “In addition to her focus on art, Kathy is a Seeds of Peace leader and is working toward attending art school upon graduation.”
