Members of the public and Portland’s school community have an opportunity this month to have fun, do good and expand their global horizons at Rock Around-the-World 2015.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the annual global rock-and-roll extravaganza, a FUNdraiser from which the proceeds go to benefit Portland Public Schools’ English language learners. The event will take place on Friday, March 13, and features dances from different cultures, delicious international hors d'oeuvres, a raffle, and live and silent auctions of goods and services from Portland and around the world. It will be held at the Italian Heritage Center, 40 Westland Avenue in Portland, from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Attendees can beat the winter blues and warm up by joining in the dancing. The international dancing includes professional dancers from Serbia, Kurdistan, India, Africa and China. After a quick demonstration, all guests are invited to dance with each group.

For the first time this year, live music will be provided during the auction, by Portland’s Tom Kovacevic, a multi-instrumentalist who has been a vital part of the Portland musical landscape through his work with the bands Olas, Fire on Fire, Cerberus Shoal, and tarpigh.

Items for the live auction include a weekend stay at a Peak's Island home, as well as dinner at a fantastic local restaurant paired with tickets to a Portland Ovations show.

Silent auction items include a signed basketball basket from the Maine Red Claws, a private fitting party for six to12 people at Aristelle, and sailing for two along beautiful Casco Bay with the Portland Schooner Company.

The event is put on by the Portland Public Schools’ Multilingual and Multicultural Center. Tickets are $25 in advance. Limited tickets for $30 will be available at the door. Tickets can be purchased electronically at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/1260748. Paper tickets are available at the schools from ELL teachers. For more information, contact the Multilingual and Multicultural Center at 874-8135, ext. 4657 or at multilingualcenter1@gmail.com, or go to the center’s Facebook page.

Funds raised at the event are used to support the Multilingual and Multicultural Center’s work with Portland's English language learners (ELLs) – students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 whose first language is not English. Programming at the center includes: Make IT Happen!, an academic coaching program for middle and high school ELLs, which has centers located in six schools and which prepares the students for the rigors of academic success, postsecondary education, and beyond; World Language, the center’s newest program, which prepares students for global competency and includes this year's launch of Portland's first public bilingual kindergarten class; and extended learning opportunities, such as the center’s eight-week summer sessions for ELL students.
