| Forum’s Focus: Fostering Diverse Educational Environments Posted on 03/30/2015 As public schools in Maine and other New England states become more racially diverse, a public forum this week will focus on how to foster diverse educational environments. The Thursday, April 2 event, to be held from 6 p.m to 8 p.m. at the Maine Historical Society in Portland, is titled “Cultivating Diversity in Maine Schools: A Presentation and Public Forum on the Report ‘Diversity in the Distance’ by the UCLA Civil Rights Project.”

| No Link Between Lunch Food and Reiche Stomach Illness Posted on 03/27/2015 The results of federal CDC testing on food served to students at Reiche are inclusive as to what caused the stomach upset and vomiting that affected 22 children March 10. However, the results show there were no bacteria found in the food that can be linked to the children’s illness.

| Board to Vote on Budget, School Start/End Times Posted on 03/26/2015 At a special meeting at Casco Bay High School on Tuesday, March 31, the Portland Board of Public Education will vote on recommending the FY2016 school budget to the City Council. The school board also is slated to vote on new school start and end times for the 2015-2016 school year.

 | Senator Angus King to Visit Portland Public Schools Posted on 03/26/2015 U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) will visit Casco Bay High School in the morning of Wednesday, April 1, 2015. Afterward, the senator will visit Presumpscot Elementary School, where he will join with National Board Certified Teachers and administrators for a lunch roundtable to discuss the upcoming reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and the challenges and opportunities faced by the Portland Public Schools when it comes to the law.

| Second Public Hearing Slated for School Start/End Times Posted on 03/18/2015 The Portland Board of Public Education approved the 2015-2016 school calendar on Tuesday, March 17. The calendar didn’t include a plan to change school start and end times this fall in order to add 20 more minutes more of learning time each school day. Instead, the board decided it will vote on that issue separately and has scheduled a second public hearing on the plan for Tuesday, March 31, to allow for more public input.
