Posted on 03/17/2015

James Hawkes, a seventh grader at Lyman Moore Middle School, placed first in the MATHCOUNTS state competition in Waterville, held March 7. The Lyman Moore MATHCOUNTS team also performed well, placing fourth in the state.

James now will be traveling to Boston to represent the state at the 2015 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Championship, to be held on May 8. Winners at the national level are invited to the White House to meet the president.

Last year, as a sixth-grader, James placed second in the state and also went on to the national competition.

Earlier this year, James won the individual first place finish in the Southern Maine regional MATHCOUNTS competition – the second year in a row that he has been No. 1 in the regional contest.

Lyman Moore's MATHCOUNTS team recently placed third in the regional competition, coming in only two points behind first-place Kennebunk and second-place Freeport.

In addition to James, those representing Moore on the team at the state competition included eighth-graders Lauren Paradise and Yifu Liu.

Earning the right to participate at the regional level as individuals were Liam Niles, Justin Donaldson, Max Brown and Isabel Hungerford.

MATHCOUNTS is an elite math competition started more than 25 years ago by some of the nation’s leading technical companies such as Lockhead International, Texas Instruments, General Motors and Raytheon, as well as the National Society of Engineers. The competition was created to encourage the brightest math minds in the nation to pursue their mathematical passion. The competition is open only to middle school students and has three stages: regional, state and national.

Parents of Lyman Moore students who want to have their children considered to try out for the elite MATHCOUNTS team should email Julie Myers, Lyman Moore’s MATHCOUNTS coach, at myersj@portlandschools.org.
