Gabriel Walker, a senior at Portland High School, recently received a 2015 Principal's Award.

The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals' Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior's academic achievement and citizenship.

Gabriel and two other Portland Public Schools’ 2015 Principal’s Award winners, Casco Bay High School senior Kim Henry and Deering High School senior Mohamed Nur, received their awards at an Honors Luncheon in Bangor on April 11.

“Gabe is a well-rounded individual and a natural leader,” said PHS Principal Deborah Migneault. “He has a presence in the classrooms, hallways, and theatre that is inspirational and motivating.”

Despite a serious medical setback in his sophomore year, Gabe has maintained an “A” average while taking Honors and Advanced Placement courses and remains involved in numerous co-curricular activities.

Gabe’s accomplishments have been rich and varied. He is a member of the National Honor Society and was elected all four years by his peers as treasurer of the class of 2015 and vice president of Student Council.

As president of the Shakespeare and drama clubs, Gabe has performed on stage and has directed one-act plays. Advisor David Smith commented that Gabe “is a talented performer who has been willing to assume a variety of roles during his four years in theatre.”

As president of the Gay, Straight and Transgender Alliance (GSTA), Gabe has worked tirelessly to ensure equity and justice for all students. “Gabe is a role model for spreading tolerance, understanding, compassion and dignity within our school community,” Principal Migneault said. Most recently, securing a gender-neutral bathroom has been a priority for the GSTA.

“Gabe has made a significant difference at Portland High School. It is a rewarding experience to have the opportunity to work with such an outstanding individual,” Migneault said.

The Principal's Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association that represents Maine's school administrators.
