Portland youngsters are invited to a picnic on Tuesday, July 28, that includes delicious food and fun activities, such as storytelling, science experiments, face painting and music.

The Summer Meals Picnic will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in Peppermint Park, located at the corner of Smith Street and Cumberland Avenue, at the bottom of Munjoy Hill. The rain date for the event is Wednesday, July 29, at the same time.

The free event is part of Portland’s new Feeding Bodies & Minds collaborative project and is a way to celebrate the power of combining summer meals and summer learning for kids.

In addition to a nutritious lunch, the event includes an ice cream bar; a ukulele corner; a story walk and music corner; cool science and face paint; and a surprise guest author.

The picnic is just one feature of the comprehensive Portland summer meals program, which provides free lunches to kids and teens age 18 and younger at 18 neighborhood sites across the city. Almost every summer meal site will offer summer learning opportunities—such as science experiments, reading, games, and crafts—almost every day this summer. The program began June 29 and runs through Aug. 14.

Feeding Bodies & Minds is a collaborative project of Portland ConnectED partners – including the Portland Public Schools, Preble Street Maine Hunger Initiative, The Opportunity Alliance, Healthy Portland, 211 Maine and more – all working with the USDA Summer Food Service Program. Portland ConnectED is a cross-sector partnership working to improve educational and economic outcomes for Portland children, families and students from cradle to career.

This year, the Portland summer meals program is also supported by grant funding through Cities Combating Hunger through Afterschool & Summer Meals Programs (CHAMPS), an initiative of the National League of Cities and the Food Research and Action Committee.
