Thanks to the South Portland store of Books-A-Million and its generous customers, the Portland Public Schools now has more than 1,000 new books to add to the shelves of its school libraries.

Books-A-Million, located at 430 Gorham Road in South Portland and part of a national bookstore chain, devoted the month of August to a book drive for the Portland Public Schools. All customers were asked at checkout if they wanted to purchase a book or two to donate to the district's school libraries. The district's school librarians had provided wish lists of hundreds of books customers could choose from.

Customers were very generous and donated a total of 1,132 books. “For us, this was our biggest summer drive that we’ve done so far,” said Sara Starcher, general manager of the Books-A-Million store in South Portland. “We were the No. 1 store in the company; we collected more than any of the other stores.” The company has about 250 stores nationwide, she said.

“The Portland Public Schools is so fortunate to have such an important benefactor in the South Portland Books-a-Million store!” said Coreen Modisette, the PPS school librarian who spearheaded the book drive effort. She said the staff at the store are “enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and genuinely interested in getting books into kids' hands. The excitement of the store's countless associates to encourage patrons to support our schools with a book donation shows that the village it takes sometimes extends beyond its borders.”

Modisette said the large number of books donated means there are titles appropriate for a range of students, from kindergarten to grade 12.

“They will infuse into our school libraries new fiction, easy-reader informational texts, classic novels, and a wide range of customer-chosen favorites we might otherwise never possess,” Modisette said. “Thanks for everything, BAM!”
