 | Harvard Pilgrim, Red Claws Hold Day of Service at Riverton Posted on 09/25/2015 More than 40 volunteers from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care of New England and the Maine Red Claws joined together on Sept. 24 for a day of service at Riverton Elementary School. Volunteers worked on building an outdoor soda-bottle greenhouse, painting murals in the gymnasium and on the playground, and hosted Living Healthy Clinics for Riverton students.

 | Peaks Island Teachers Start School Year with a Splash Posted on 09/21/2015 On warm days, Peaks Island youngsters engage in a rite of passage they call the “dock jump,” in which they leap from the ferry pier into the cold waters of Casco Bay. On Sept. 19, teachers from Peaks Island Elementary School took a dock jump to herald the start of the new school year – as their students watched.

 | $100K Award Would Help Create Technology-Based Maine Workforce Posted on 09/18/2015 If Pious Ali, a youth and community engagement specialist with Portland Empowered and a Portland school board member, wins the Larry O’Toole Award, he’d use the money to create a summer camp to help kids learn vital computer-coding skills. The winner of the award is chosen by online voters (the deadline is noon on Wednesday, Sept. 30) and Ali is hoping to generate support – not for himself but for underserved youth in Portland.

 | Portland vs. Deering Game Nets $2,000+ for Cancer Research Posted on 09/15/2015 On Sept. 14, the Deering and Portland high school field hockey teams supported the family of a Deering player whose mother has been battling breast cancer with a fundraising Play4theCure match at Deering High School. Portland won the game and the teams raised more than $2,000 for cancer research.

 | Hall School PTO To Host 5K Fundraiser on Sept. 27 Posted on 09/10/2015 The Hall Elementary School PTO will host its inaugural Planet Hall 5K race on Sept. 27. The event features a tree-lined course through one of Portland’s most attractive neighborhoods and nearly a mile of trail running on Portland Trails. Runners of all abilities, walkers and strollers are welcome. The race starts at 9 a.m. but there is a free one-mile fun run for kids at 8:30 a.m.
