The planting of 60 new trees Oct. 29 on the campus of the Portland Arts & Technology High School (PATHS) and Casco Bay High School will not only be good for the environment, but the trees also will provide shade and beauty for students and learning opportunities.

Mayor Michael Brennan, city of Portland Arborist Jeff Tarling and Portland Public Schools’ officials will join with TD Bank employees tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the schools’ 196 Allen Avenue site for a TD Tree Days event. TD Tree Days is a nationwide program that TD Bank conducts to promote urban greening. Here in Maine, Portland was just one of two communities selected for the award. Portland officials submitted two plans for the $8,000 grant, and TD Bank selected the PATHS/Casco Bay High proposal based on its mission.

The group will plant 30 small heritage apple trees in the field near the transportation building along with 30 native trees throughout the campus area. The planting will include new sugar maples out front along Allen Avenue to extend the current heritage sugar maples (the largest in Portland.) The new trees will not only add to the aesthetic of the school campus, but will provide educational opportunities for years to come.
