Casco Bay High School tenth-graders just finished an “Africa Rising” expedition. The students chose a country in Africa to study, then researched to find out how they could aid that specific country's rise. The students then raised $2,800 at a Halloween Dance to donate to projects to aid African countries.
On Nov. 19, the students gave presentations to fellow students at the school to win money for their causes. Their peers then voted and eight finalists each won $100 for their cause: Lucy Otto, Julian Peck, Jonah Peterson, Abrar Ahmed, Sophie Szkatowski, Jacob Libby, Hasanain Al Khaleeli and Alice Kenny. The overall winner chosen was Farhiyo Hassan, who earned $2,000 for her cause, Action Against Hunger International.
This video on the Portland Public Schools' YouTube page (portlandschools) highlights the presentations of the nine students chosen as finalists for the money.
