King Middle School’s York eighth-graders held a Climate March down Congress Street on Dec. 4 as part of a learning expedition called “ReThink, ReCharge, ReAct,” in which they’ve been studying the devastating effects of climate change and which energy sources and individual lifestyle choices can best sustain the planet. Now, on Thursday, Dec. 17, they’ll premier some environmental Public Service Announcements (PSAs) they’ve created.

The students hope that the PSAs will be of interest to local television networks that need PSAs to fill their "free air time requirements.”

King is a model school in the EL Education (formerly Expeditionary Learning) network. The 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. premier is the culminating event in the eighth-graders’ ReCharge, ReAct, ReThink expedition. It also is a time for students to display their learning to friends and family.

It will begin in the King Middle School cafeteria with a student overview of the whole expedition. The audience can then move into one of 10 different classrooms where students will premier their PSAs on one of ten topics related to the environment.

The PSA topics include: Keep Maine Waters Clean; Vegetarian Power Composting and Food Waste; Cultivating Community Sustained Agriculture; Turn Out the Lights; People Power – Feet, Bikes, and Public Transportation in Portland; Buy Local; Eternal Trash: Plastic & Styrofoam for Life, Recycle Repurpose; Pest-in-side - Pesticides and their Impact; Waste not, Want Not - Food Waste and American Culture; and Sustainable Oceans.
