Deering High School will hold an “8th-Grade Open House” on Wednesday, Jan. 13, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is designed to help families learn about Deering as their eighth-graders decide which of Portland’s three high schools they want to attend next year.

The Portland Public Schools offers eighth-graders a unique opportunity to choose between three high schools, each with its own distinctive personality and offerings. Open houses at each school and other events over the next few months are being scheduled to aid eighth-grade families in choosing a school by a March 11 commitment deadline.

Portland students may attend any of the three public high schools – Portland High, Deering and Casco Bay High School – regardless of where they live in the city.

Casco Bay High School held its family night/open house in December and Portland High School will hold its open house on Jan. 28. At Deering’s event on Jan. 13 in the school’s auditorium, students and their families will learn what makes the school stand out – what the school calls the “Deering difference.”

Deering is the only International Studies Schools Network high school in New England and the most diverse high school north of Boston. Deering works to develop interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning that emphasize global competence. The school offers a wide range of academic courses, including numerous Advanced Placement options, tiered interventions, and even online learning. Additionally, Deering students participate in a vast array of clubs and activities, ranging from drama to sports.

There is no enrollment cap at Deering or Portland High. Casco Bay High School is a smaller school, so if applications for next year’s ninth-grade class at Casco Bay High School exceed 97 students per grade level, a lottery will be held in February.

For more information about Deering and its open house, contact the school at (207) 874-8260 or visit its website: dhs.portlandschools.org.
