The Portland Board of Public Education is inviting the public to assist it in developing a profile of the type of leader Portland wants in a new school superintendent.

Portland community members are encouraged to fill out a survey to share their ideas. Also, the board plans to hold two community forums on Thursday, Feb. 4, to gather public input to help in developing a leadership profile as the board searches for a new superintendent. For the public’s convenience, the forums will be held in two locations – at King Middle School and at Casco Bay High School. Language interpreters will be available at the King Middle School location. Both forums will run from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Earlier in the day on Feb. 4, focus group meetings will be held with invited stakeholder groups.

The online and hard copy survey is available starting Jan. 26. Any member of the Portland community who wishes to provide input is encouraged to complete the survey by Feb. 12. Hard copies of the survey can be found in the main offices of the district’s schools, at Central Office, at Portland City Hall and at three Portland Public Library locations (the main library and the Riverton and Peaks branches). Information about taking the online version of the survey can be found below.**

The board’s goal is to have a new superintendent in place by July 1. The new leader will succeed Jeanne Crocker, who is currently serving as the interim superintendent.

The survey, focus groups and community forums are all part of the board’s effort to engage all stakeholders and clearly communicate all aspects of the superintendent search process. Other efforts include having search team consultants conduct one-on-one phone interviews with board members.

Data gathered from all sources will be analyzed by consultants from BWP & Associates, the national educational leadership search firm the board has hired to assist in the superintendent search. The findings will contribute to a profile that will be developed and used to identify and select the most highly qualified individual to lead Maine’s largest and most diverse school district.

The superintendent position has been advertised in several publications and on the district’s website, www.portlandschools.org. The deadline for application submittal is March 1.
