Deering High School is partnering with a charity that sends food to hungry children in countries in the Developing World – and is inviting the community to help.

On Friday, March 18, starting at 8 a.m., shifts of 600 people gathered in Deering’s gym – including students and teachers from Deering and Westbrook high schools, Jobs for Maine’s Graduates and members of the Portland community – will be packing more than 250,000 meals to be sent to countries in need. And they’ll pack all those meals in just one day.

The meals – comprised of rice, soy protein and dehydrated vegetables – will go Nicaragua and Haiti as part of the Million Meals Maine program. “Maine people making a world of difference to starving children…one meal at a time,” is the way the charity describes itself.

This is the second year in a row that the charity has partnered with Deering, allowing the school’s students to “take action” to end childhood hunger. At last year’s two-day event at Deering, a total of 217,728 meals were packed.

Students have been fundraising in their Deering coaching groups and are looking forward to competing to see which group can pack the most meals. Each class will have a two-hour shift to pack meals and when they are not packing meals, they will be competing in a friendly World Quest global knowledge competition. The Global Issues and Human Rights classes at Deering, in partnership with the World Affairs Council, will be hosting the competition between classes in the cafeteria and library.

The packing event will continue into the evening with a second shift for 600 people from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Friends, siblings, parents, students and community members are invited and encouraged to participate in the meal-packing event. All ages are welcome. Fundraising for the meal ingredients is ongoing, with donations accepted until April 18. Please register to volunteer and/or donate on the Million Meals Maine website: http://millionmealsmaine.com.

Deering, which prides itself on the great diversity of its student body, is the only International Studies Schools Network high school in New England. The school works to develop interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning that emphasize global competence.

Deering last year raised awareness and took action against food insecurity through the Hunger Project.

In that monthlong project, which took place last March, Deering teachers and freshman students engaged in common experiences in math, English, science and social studies to create public service announcements, letters to policy makers, photo voice projects, and other creative products to examine the driving questions of: “Why do hunger and poverty exist?” “What are the challenges we face in dealing with hunger and poverty?” and “What can students do at Deering to improve food security?”
