King Middle School Athletic Director Harry “Duke” Madsen won the 2016 Excellence in Middle Level Athletic Administration Award on Thursday, April 7, at the annual spring conference of the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (MIAAA).

The MIAAA created the award with a special emphasis on the work of the middle level athletic administrator.  The recipients have to have contributed to middle school athletics in a positive manner at the local or state level.

“Madsen has been an integral contributor to the Southern Maine Middle School Athletic Conference, where he serves as basketball liaison for the Cumberland County Division and the umpire assignor for the sport of baseball,” the MIAAA said. “In addition, Madsen has demonstrated creativity and innovation in increasing participation opportunities for students in his school.”

King Middle School Interim Principal Kathleen Bouchard said, “We cannot be more proud that our King Middle School Athletic Director, Duke Madsen, has earned this award. Sixteen years ago, he set his goals to improve the quality of the athletic and academic performance of our middle school athletes. Throughout the years, the teams’ success has demonstrated fair play and good sportsmanship. His guidance and advocacy has supported many coaches, students and parents.  We are very proud that his peers have recognized his significant, positive influence.”

Madsen received the award at the MIAAA’s annual Awards Luncheon at the Samoset Resort in Rockport.
