 | Ocean Avenue School Now Authorized IB World School Posted on 08/25/2016 Ocean Avenue Elementary School (OAES) has been named an authorized IB World School, Primary Years Programme. OAES is now the only elementary school in Maine to attain such a distinction, and one of just a few in New England, according to OAES Principal Beverly Coursey.

 | School Board Creates New Parent Partnership Committee Posted on 08/17/2016 The Portland Board of Public Education voted Aug. 16 to approve a resolution to create a Parent Partnership Policy Ad Hoc Committee. The new committee will review and revise the district’s current Parent Involvement Policy, using the Parent & Family Engagement Manifesto as a guide. The manifesto, developed by Portland Empowered, is a document that outlines how the Portland Public Schools can enhance engagement with parents and families.

Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten children start on Tuesday, Sept. 6, the day after Labor Day. But even before the first day of classes, and also into the fall, district schools will be holding events that include ice cream socials, barbeques, open houses to meet teachers and visit classrooms and welcoming events for new students.

 | Summer Science & Literacy Academy Students To Showcase Learning Posted on 08/10/2016 Reiche Community School’s Summer Science and Literacy Academy began July 11, with students participating in a literacy-based experience highlighted with the science theme of plants and animals. The academy’s last day is Friday, Aug. 12, when the students will demonstrate to their families what they have learned.

 | PPS Teachers Learn at Side x Side Summer Arts Institute Posted on 07/14/2016 The second annual Side x Side Summer Arts Institute 2016 took place June 22-23 at the Portland Museum of art. This institute was for all participating Side x Side classroom teachers and served as a dedicated time to meet with Side x Side teaching artists to further plan and develop implementation of Side x Side programs in the classroom. The institute featured speakers, expert-led activities and interactive workshops.
