Deering High School social studies teacher Andrew Gordon was recently recognized by the Portland Board of Public Education and Superintendent Xavier Botana for “consistently going above and beyond.”

Gordon, who teaches history at the school, was honored at the board’s Oct. 4 meeting. He’s known for student-centered approaches to teaching.

For example, last fall his history class organized a mayoral forum at the high school, during which students got to question candidates running to be mayor of Portland on issues important to them such as education, immigration and affordable housing. And this past February, he was part of a winning faculty team joining students in competing in the Academic WorldQuest competition. The competition’s goal is informing and engaging high school students in global affairs.

An accolade that Botana read at the school board meeting also noted Gordon’s dedication to students, the school and his profession outside of the classroom:

In addition to his commitment to the students, Mr. Gordon is a frequent attendee at  sporting events, concerts and theater performances. He takes leadership roles in organizations such as Anatomy of Leadership, Senior Capstones, National Honor Society and organizing the eighth-grade Open House. He is also co-editor of the digital school newsletter, the Clocktower. In past years, Mr. Gordon has coached both field hockey and lacrosse.

Mr. Gordon’s commitment to his profession is shown by participating in numerous committees as a professional. In addition to being a member of the Collaborative Leadership Design Team and the Shared Leadership Team, Andrew is the facilitator of the Student Learning Outcomes Working Group/Committee.

On top of all this, Mr. Gordon also finds time to act as emcee and announcer at many Deering events, including the annual retirement party and the annual seniors v. staff basketball game. He also acts as a mentor to new teachers – allowing him to share his professional expertise with others.

Andrew Gordon demonstrates his commitment to the teaching profession, to his students and to Deering daily through his tireless work on behalf of the Deering community. Despite his long hours (he is often one of the first people to arrive in the building every day and is one of the last to leave), he is always calm, patient and willing to lend an ear to any person – staff or student – which whom he engages.
