The Portland Public Schools, in partnership with EnviroLogix, will hold the Third Annual Portland Public Schools’ STEM Exposition on Friday, Nov. 4, at the University of Southern Maine’s Sullivan gymnasium in Portland. More than 1,800 visitors and exhibitors are expected at the 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. event, at which Portland Public Schools’ students, local businesses, and postsecondary schools and other organizations will share their learning in STEM – science, technology, engineering and math.

The community also is invited to attend during public visiting hours, which run from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“I’m looking forward to attending the STEM Expo, which will be my first,” said Portland Superintendent Xavier Botana, who joined the district July 1. “I’m delighted that the Expo is in its third year and now has become a tradition in our district each fall. Thank you to EnviroLogix for joining us again to help our students acquire the STEM learning so vital to college and career success in the 21st century.”

"EnviroLogix is pleased to once again partner with the Portland Public Schools in this Third Annual STEM Expo,” said Bill Welch, president of EnviroLogix, a Portland-based company that develops and manufactures innovative detection technology for every link in the worldwide food production chain. “Each year, we welcome the opportunity to be a part of opening students’ eyes to the exciting world of STEM possibilities by showing them specific examples of applied innovation that exist right here in their backyard. Also, since EnviroLogix is a business that is built on technology, we see the Expo as an investment not only in the community but also in potential future employees.”

The Expo grows each year. This year, there will be approximately 50 exhibitors. Roughly half of those exhibitors will be students from PPS elementary, middle and high schools, showcasing their learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.

Postsecondary exhibitors will include USM; the University of Maine and the university’s 4-H STEM Ambassadors; the Maine College of Art; the University of New England; and Southern Maine Community College (SMCC). Business/other organization exhibitors will include EnviroLogix, Engineers Without Borders; Kepware Technologies; Learning Works; Challenger Learning Center of Maine; ACE Mentor Program; and the Portland Public Library. More than 1,000 Portland Public Schools students will be touring the exhibits throughout the day.

The Portland Fire Department will be at the event as well, with a truck to demonstrate rescue techniques using hydraulics and other technology.
