Required Enrollment Documents
Documents Needed for Enrollment
After completing the initial online application, you will be asked to bring the following documents to your neighborhood school to complete the enrollment process. Families who need English language assistance should bring these documents to the Multilingual Family Welcome Center at Central Office instead.
- Original proof of birth document (reviewed but not kept)
- Immunization records
- Proof of residency in Portland (such as a utility bill—electricity, cable, or internet—or a lease agreement/title of primary residence)
Proof of Residence: Guidance
To enroll your child in our schools, we are required to confirm that you and your child live within the city of Portland. This is based on School Board Policy JFAA: Admission of Resident Students. If you are a legal guardian and your child’s primary residence is with you in Portland, your child is entitled to attend our schools.
As part of the enrollment process, you’ll need to provide Proof of Residency. Our goal is to make this process as easy and inclusive as possible for all families. Below is a helpful guide to the types of documents that can be used to verify your address under Maine law.
What Counts as Proof of Residency?
To help us confirm your address, all documents used to establish residency must meet the following requirements:
- List the legal guardian’s name as the person receiving the document.
- Show the student’s home address in Portland.
- Be current (not expired or outdated).
- Be the kind of document that is only sent to people who live at that address (for example, a utility bill or lease, not an advertisement).
These requirements help us ensure that every student has the legal right to attend Portland Public Schools.
Experiencing Homelessness or Housing Instability?
If you or your family are experiencing homelessness or housing instability, your child still has the right to attend Portland Public Schools. Please let us know by:
- Checking the box for housing status on the Online Registration Form, or
- Telling the school secretary at the school where your child will attend.
We are here to support you and help your child enroll without delay.
