Volunteer For Our Schools

Discover A Sense Of Purpose Greater Than Yourself

The Portland Public Schools community is comprised of individuals who are committed to the belief that together, we can accomplish great things.

Portland is a tight-knit community propelled forward by hundreds of mission-driven organizations. Designed to engage students and enhance their educational experience, PPS benefits from partnerships with dozens of selectively-chosen local non-profits.

PPS welcomes volunteers and community involvement in our schools and sincerely thanks you for your generosity and support. Last year parents and community members volunteered over 94,000 hours to our schools. Each volunteer made a real difference in the lives of students.

Volunteer Registration

To ensure a safe school environment and to safeguard our students’ privacy, the Portland Board of Public Education has implemented a volunteer registration policy. The registration process includes:

  • All volunteers completing a Portland Public School Volunteer Application and signing a Student Privacy Statement and Confidentiality Agreement. It is vitally important that the privacy rights of students and their families are respected.
  • Depending on your level of involvement with students, you may be asked for additional information such as employment and references. However, all volunteers who work with students will be subject to a background check.

We do maintain a file of those people willing to volunteer in our schools who have been appropriately registered and screened. Please know that this information remains confidential and is not shared beyond the Portland Public Schools.

Community Coordinators

If you have any questions about volunteering or the volunteer registration process, please feel free to contact the the part-time community coordinator that works in your school. The role of the community coordinator is to develop and coordinate opportunities for meaningful family, business and/or community involvement with our students and staff. After your application has been received and the screening process is complete, you will be contacted by the Community Coordinator at your selected school.
