The Enrollment and Facility Study Commission – formed this past fall to identify and recommend possible cost-saving efficiencies to the Portland Board of Public Education – voted Feb. 14 to recommend one option, but “only if necessary” in the event of a large budget shortfall. The option the Commission recommended would save $2.8 million by repurposing one middle school building, reconfiguring high schools and middle schools and creating room for pre-K in the elementary schools by taking 5th grade out of the elementary schools. The Portland Board of Public Education voted Jan. 22 to authorize an additional $550,000 for costs associated with the Lyseth Elementary School renovation project. The Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS) hosted the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce in October and the United Way of Greater Portland in September. Both groups held their board meetings at PATHS and took a tour of the building to learn more about Career and Technical Education or CTE. Mallory Haar, an English language learner (ELL) teacher at Casco Bay High School, is the winner of three awards for outstanding teaching. Haar has won a 2018 Lawrence W. O’Toole Teacher Leadership Award from the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, which includes a $15,000 grant, and is the 2018 recipient of the Education for the Common Good Award from Bowdoin College. On Aug. 7, the Portland Board of Public Education voted to approve a resolution to support a City Council proposal to send to Portland voters a City Charter amendment allowing non-citizen legal residents of the city to vote in municipal elections.
