Christopher McCarthy has been selected as the new director of the BREATHE Clinical & Behavioral Supports Program. BREATHE is a specialized educational program dedicated to fostering each individual's success with academic, social, and emotional growth.

McCarthy is joining the Portland Public School from the Brunswick School Department, where he has been principal/director of the REAL (Relevant Experiential Authentic Learning) School, a day treatment school, since 2018.

McCarthy’s previous experience includes consulting; being a special education teacher and administrator in Vermont; being a quality improvement administrator at the Maine Quality Forum; and manager of integrated health services at Bath Iron Works.

He’s also a past member of the Brunswick School Board and has coached lacrosse, football and basketball with the Brunswick schools.

McCarthy holds a bachelor’s degree in special education and psychology from Lyndon State University; a master’s degree in community psychology from Michigan State University; and has studied education law at the University of Southern Maine and special education law at the University of Vermont.
