Multilingual families are invited to a Back-to-School Fair on Saturday, Sept. 16. The fair will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the East End Community Center, located at 195 North St. Families can get help with filling out school-related paperwork and learn about community services.

Multilingual families can get assistance completing the school forms in their children’s First-Day Packet. Families should bring their packets with them; interpreters will be provided to help decipher them! Also, more than 20 local organizations will be attending to explain what community resources are available in and around Portland for multilingual families. The fair is an annual event put on by the Portland Public Schools’ Multilingual & Multicultural Center to support multilingual families in the schools and community.

Translation help will be provided in these languages: Portuguese, Spanish, French, Arabic, Acholi, Vietnamese, Khmer, Lingala, Somali, Swahili, Kirundi, and Kinyarwanda. In addition, the YMCA of Southern Maine and the Children's Museum and Theatre of Maine will provide children's activities. Refreshments also will be provided.

Participating community partners in this event include: AVESTA Property Management; Boys & Girls Club; Breakwater Enrichment Center; Casco Bay High School PTO; Catholic Charities Refugee and Immigration Services; Children's Museum of Maine; the city of Portland’s Community Policing program; the Girl Scouts; Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project; Kids Peace; LearningWorks; Let's Go, Lyman Middle School's Athletic Program; Maine Access Immigrant Network; Maine Migrant Education Program; the city of Portland’s Recreation Department; the Root Cellar; Portland Community Squash; Portland Mentoring Alliance; the University of Southern Maine; Wayside Food Programs; and the YMCA.
