The Portland Board of Public Education has approved the appointment of Boyd Marley, currently the interim principal of East End Community School (EECS), as that school’s new principal as of July 1.

Superintendent Xavier Botana recommended Marley for the post. The school board voted on the recommendation at its Feb. 27 meeting.

Marley joined the Portland Public Schools in 2013 as assistant principal at EECS and held that position until he was appointed interim principal of the school this past fall.

“In his time as assistant principal and then interim principal, Boyd Marley has shown himself to be a caring and capable administrator who is devoted to the success of EECS students and staff,” Botana said. “Boyd was selected after a search that included input from a team of staff, interviews with me and a parent meeting at the school. His appointment will allow EECS to continue on its positive trajectory.”

Marley holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Maine in criminology and a master’s degree in education from the University of New England. Prior to joining the Portland Public Schools, he was a special education teacher with the South Portland School Department for nearly two decades. During his time in South Portland, Marley taught at the middle school level (Mahoney and Memorial schools) and also at Kaler Elementary School. Marley also is a former state legislator, who served in the Maine House of Representatives from 2000-2008.
