Margarida Celestino, a senior at Casco Bay High School, has been selected as student host of an EL Education 2020 Virtual Summit titled “What Matters Most: Moving Toward More Equitable Schools.” The summit will run from Oct. 22 through Oct. 23.

EL Education (formerly Expeditionary Learning) is a leading K-12 nonprofit focused on raising student achievement across diverse schools and communities. CBHS is an EL Education Credentialed School.

The virtual summit this year is in lieu of EL Education’s in-person national conference for the educational community. The organization recently announced that Margarida “will expertly lead us through an inspiring program as student host” at the event, which will focus on racial justice, quality curriculum, social-emotional learning and “on promising practices that can guide our work.”

During the two-day event, Margarida will share her personal reflections on immigrating with her family from Angola, West Africa, life and learning during the pandemic, and conversations about race at her school.

Read some of her reflections in a posting by EL Education titled “Sneak Peek: Meet the Student Host Who Steals the Show.”

CBHS Principal Derek Pierce described Margarida’s selection as host as “a very cool honor.”
