The Casco Bay High School Class of 2021 reinvented the March to the Post Office on Friday, Jan. 8, with the support of the whole community.

The CBHS annual event celebrates every senior completing at least one college application – and promotes the Portland Public Schools’ goal of graduating every student college ready. The tradition was scaled back this year to make sure everyone stayed safe during the pandemic.

Here’s how CBHS Principal Derek Pierce described this year’s event:

“It started with letters of support from loved ones (thank you Senior families!) as well as from freshmen buddies in crew spaces decorated by sophomores and juniors. Seniors received hats and hoodies courtesy of TD Bank. Then seniors reflected on future plans before writing letters of thanks to friends or family who helped them reach the milestone of applying to college.
Then senior Logan Andrick's bag-piping summoned a representative from each crew and the group paraded around the halls as Joseph gathered the letters. Finally Crew reps continued their march downtown from Monument Square to the post office to City Hall before being greeted by remarks from city leaders and stirring words from senior Yusur Jasim, a first-generation college student.
The rest of the class live-streamed the downtown event back at school – and enjoyed homemade whoopie pies made by classmates.
Congrats to the Class of 2021 for marching toward their desired futures and Movin' On Up!”

The event is typically held in December but was moved to January because of inclement weather.
