The Portland Board of Public Education and Superintendent Xavier Botana recently honored school nurse Becky Bell for recently obtaining National Board Certification for School Nursing (NBCSN).

The recognition took place at the Board’s June 18 meeting.

Botana made the following remarks concerning Bell, the nurse for Casco Bay High School and the Portland Arts & Technology High School (PATHS):

“The Nationally Certified credential reflects the pinnacle of competence and professionalism in the field.  It reflects an educator’s uncompromising commitment to their professional practice, as it requires a huge amount of work. To earn the NBCSN, a registered nurse must demonstrate a high level of education, clinical practice experience, and knowledge through a rigorous process of learning, reflection, and documentation and open their practice to external review and validation.

Nurse Becky exemplifies this in her everyday practice. As a nursing professional for over 40 years (we’re counting the fact that as a little girl she played nurse with her dolls), she has lived the Nightingale Oath in everything that she has done. In addition to the NBCSN credential, Nurse Becky has a BS in Human Services and a Masters in Nursing and Nursing education.  She’s worked in almost every clinical specialty and has taught nursing at the postsecondary level. Her true love is community and public health.

She joined the Portland Public Schools in 2010 and since then has left a mark in the lives of students and staff in PATHS and Casco Bay high schools. We are very fortunate to have amazing nurses in the Portland Public Schools and nurse Bell is a wonderful example of the caring and dedicated people in that role.

As superintendent, but also as the parent of a Casco Bay student who has benefitted many times from your wisdom, your deep knowledge of adolescent health and your warm and caring personal touch, I would like to personally thank you for all that you do every day for my student and all of the thousands of students whose lives you’ve touched.  Thank you, Nurse Becky!”
