Portland voters in 2017 approved a $64 million “Building for our Future” (BFOF) bond to renovate four of the city’s public elementary schools. Official groundbreaking ceremonies and a ribbon cutting ceremony were held over the last two weeks of October 2021 to mark the latest developments in the renovation work.

Students at Lyseth Elementary School returned to a newly renovated building this fall. An official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held on October 28 to celebrate. Construction work on the three other BFOF elementary schools is underway.

Also in late October, ceremonial groundbreaking events were held at Reiche, Presumpscot and Longfellow schools to mark the start of the long-awaited renovations on those schools.

Superintendent Xavier Botana said the events were milestones in the effort to provide the children of Portland with the 21st century learning environments they deserve and need to succeed. He thanked the community for their patience and cooperation during construction.

“We are aware of the significant challenges those disruptions pose for students, staff, families and neighbors, and we pledge to do everything we can to minimize those effects and move the projects along,” he said. He added that the beautiful renovations at Lyseth School “show us that the end result will be well worth the disruptions caused by construction.”
