Kassidy Plummer, captain of the Deering High School Varsity Cheering team, will travel to England to perform in London’s New Year’s Day Parade on Tuesday, January 1, 2019.

Kassidy will be one of roughly 1,000 American high school cheerleaders performing to the crowds lining the streets – which typically number more than 300,000 people. The London New Year's Day Parade, also known as "LNYDP," is an annual parade through the streets of the West End of London. The event is televised and streamed to millions of viewers worldwide.

Kassidy will cheer and dance a choreographed routine on the parade route past world famous London landmarks, along with marching bands, giant inflatables, and thousands of other performers. This is her first time attending the London’s New Year’s Day Parade.

Kassidy qualified for the elite performance group while attending a Portland Area Cheer Camp in July – designed and hosted by Deering High School coaches, Nicole Fitzgerald and Alison Bromley, in tandem with the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) and its Varsity Spirit parent organization.

Kassidy was one of three cheerleaders to make the exclusive All-American team and earn the chance to cheer in London. All-Americans are selected by UCA or National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) staff at Varsity Spirit summer camps for their superior skill and leadership. All-Americans represent the top 12 percent of ninth- through 12th-grade cheerleaders in the nation.

“In a sport where individual recognition and awards are quite rare, this experience rewards her dedication and talent and is the opportunity of a lifetime,” said one of her coaches, Alison Bromley.

Kassidy is currently a sophomore at Deering High School in her fourth season on the school’s varsity team. In addition to her high school athletic career, she has cheered competitively in Portland Tide Youth Cheering, Elite All Stars of Maine, and Port City Athletics programs.
