The Deering High School Debate Team had another tremendous day at the recent "Nutcracker Sweeps" tournament, racking up a series of wins. Three veterans and eight first-year debaters competed in the Dec. 4 competition.

The team’s Public Forum debaters dominated that event. Seniors Balqies Mohamed and Emily Cheung took the top spot in Varsity Public Forum; and freshmen Mya Landry and Violet Blum Levine took the top spot in Novice Public Forum.

Junior Sam Rank placed third in Lincoln Douglas (junior varsity) and freshman Eli Tuchinsky placed fourth in Lincoln Douglas (novice) on his first time trying the event.  Sophomore Archie Rubin placed fourth in Congress. Overall, Deering finished in second place among all schools present, competing with teams from Cape Elizabeth, Cheverus, Thornton Academy, South Portland and others.

Other Deering debaters who helped the team distinguish itself were senior Emmanuel Saili (debating for the first time at the Dec. 4 event), sophomore Matthew Okulski, and freshmen Isabella Figdor and Anya Heiden.

“We are so pleased to see new energy infused into Deering debate this year, as we expect even more first-time debaters to participate in the tournaments starting in January,” said Deering English and ELL teacher Molly Callaghan, who advises the team, along with Krista Simonis. “The fun and enthusiasm that's evident in our new team members is a testament to the leadership of team captains Emily and Balqies, who have recruited and developed a stacked roster of new debaters. Congratulations to all of these hard-working students! Deering debate: ‘Arguably the best.’”

The team’s wins at this event are the latest in a series of tournament successes by DHS Debate Team members over recent years.
