Shana Genre, a Deering High School English teacher, was recently honored by the Portland Board of Public Education and Superintendent Xavier Botana for being a model teacher – and an exceptional poet!

Genre’s poems were published in “Balancing Act 2: An Anthology of Poems by Fifty Maine Women” by Littoral Books. In late December, the Portland Press Herald published her poem titled “The Seed,” which was awarded a prize by the anthology’s editors.

Genre was recognized at the school board’s Jan. 22 meeting. Botana said he and the board often recognizes teachers for their excellent work inside the classroom, but that Genre was also being acknowledged for her accomplishments outside school.

“Our recognition today is for someone who is an outstanding teacher, but today we recognize her for her exceptional literary work,” Botana said.

“At Deering,” he continued, “Ms. Genre makes a tremendous contribution to our students. She is a teacher of English and creative writing and she is also the co-advisor of Breccia, Deering’s literary magazine.” Breccia dates back to 1879 and may be the oldest continuously running student-published literary magazine in Maine.

“We often struggle to convey to students how the work that they do in school opens the doors to pursuits outside of school. They ask, ‘Why do I have to do this?’” Botana said. “Ms. Genre, as an accomplished author, models for students the relevance of what they are learning.”

He added, “We are very proud of you, Shana, and are pleased to be able to honor you tonight.”
