Deering High School is offering a series of new extended learning opportunities (ELOs) to students this year called “Adulting 101 – Workshops for Simple Life-Hacks.” These “life-hack” workshops help prepare students for life after high school.

For example, the topic on Friday, Sept. 20, was car maintenance. In this post-drivers-ed workshop, students learned how to change a flat tire through a live AAA demonstration on site. They also learned what it means to own a car, such as checking, oil, fluids, car registration, car inspection and the costs of both, how to NOT get a ticket while on the road, car safety and need-to-know maintenance.

In other upcoming classes, students will be able to get the answers to such questions as: What are taxes?; How do I find a job?; How do I find an apartment after high school?; How do I shop on a budget?; How can I save money?; and What is a resume?

The school’s Extended Learning Opportunities Coordinator Sydney Williams decided to create and facilitate these workshops after hearing students’ pleas to know more about life post high school.

Adulting courses are increasingly in demand at high schools nationwide. Williams chose the topics based on researching what other schools are offering as well as asking Deering students what they want to know.

The workshops are being offered during students’ open WINN block, which run from 12:20 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Upcoming sessions include:
