Deering High School social workers Melissa McStay and Bob Carroll were recently honored by the Portland Board of Public Education and Superintendent Xavier Botana during September, National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. McStay and Carroll recently received a Caring About Lives in Maine Suicide Prevention award.

The recognition took place at the Board’s Sept. 24 meeting.

Botana said that, in addition to their work at Deering, McStay and Carroll also serve as department chairs for social work at the district level.

“We are fortunate to have Melissa and Bob in the Portland Public Schools,” Botana said. “Melissa has been with us since 2002 and Bob since 2006 and they are a great example of how a team can be so much more than the sum of its members. Their partnership is a value add for Deering, our social work team and even the State of Maine.

Botana said that the two social workers organized an awareness training for the staff of Deering High School “and personally delivered suicide prevention lessons to all high school seniors. They then took their expertise to assist the Maine Youth Suicide Prevention Program in creating lessons that are now available to all schools in Maine. For their work, they received the state award.”
