Most of Portland’s public schools will hold “practice” days the first full week of September, when students will get a chance to experience what in-person school will be like. Families also will be required to do a COVID-19 symptom check with their students before they leave home, verifying they have done so electronically. The symptom check will be a daily requirement when school officially starts Sept. 14.

The practice day for Cohort A students will be Wednesday, Sept. 9. Cohort B students’ practice day will be Thursday, Sept. 10. Student attendance is not required but is encouraged.

Early in the morning of each practice day, families will receive a text message or email from the district asking them to verify that they have done a symptom check before sending their student to school. Families will be asked to answer a single question to verify that their child has none of the symptoms on the list.

Families, please make sure to complete the symptom check as early as possible. The sooner you do it, the sooner we will be able to get your student into school.  If you do not do it, your student will not be allowed to enter the building until they have cleared the symptom check.  This may require us getting hold of you to verify the information provided by your student.

Thank you for your help with this important safety check. We will be asking families to do this daily, so this will be a great opportunity to practice a new routine for your family.
