The Deering High School Rocket League Esports Team went to Bangor Feb. 5 to participate in a LAN (Local Area Network) esports tournament – and won!

The students who participated were seniors Connor Eide and Ryan Mulligan; juniors Nathan Dooley and Kaelob Buonassisi and freshman Braden Lamb.

The tournament was hosted by Husson College's Esports team, said Deering science teacher Cyle Davenport, who is the school’s esports coach. He said 10 teams from high schools around Maine competed. “The double elimination bracket style event was broadcasted live on Twitch,” he said.

Esports, which is short for electronic sports, is a form of competition using video games.

Davenport said, “Esports started at Deering last year during the pandemic as a way for students to connect and compete remotely. High schools and colleges all over the world have Esports teams that play a variety of competitive video games."

"At Deering," he continued, "we are currently playing Rocket League, Overwatch, League of Legends, Splatoon 2, and Ultimate Smash Bros. Our Rocket League team won the State Championship in December for the third time in a row!”
