Thanks to the United Way of Greater Portland and generous carpenters and businesses, the Portland Public Schools recently received 204 easels to aid in students’ outdoor learning.

“The easels will hold a whiteboard for teachers to use when teaching their classes outside,” explained Brooke Teller, the district’s Outdoor Learning Coordinator. “Each school is getting 12 easels for their outdoor spaces. The United Way of Greater Portland volunteered to take this on and it is an amazing gift to our teachers and students.”

Superintendent Xavier Botana expressed the district’s gratitude for the donation at the Portland Board of Public Education meeting on Sept. 15. The Portland Public Schools thanks United Way and carpenters Dan Heckethorn, John Mullen, Mike McGuigan, Jeff Grinvalsky and John Leavitt, Regional Business Manager, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont of the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, who built all the easels with support from Hancock Lumber, Home Depot and the Habitat for Humanity Re-Use store.

The Portland Public School has readied 156 outdoor learning spaces to start school this fall. Learning outdoors carries many benefits, particularly during the pandemic. Outdoor learning can be an opportunity for students to be out in the fresh air and become more connected with nature and the environment.
