Jake Giessmann has been selected as the new assistant principal at Deering High School. His new role officially begins July 1.

Dr.  Giessman, who holds a doctorate in educational leadership, will be stepping into the role held by Interim Assistant Principal Jim Moses, who is retiring. The Board of Public Education approved Giessman’s appointment at its May 4 meeting.

Giessman has been interim principal of the PPS Remote Academy since January of this year, moving from his position as assistant principal at Lyman Moore Middle School.

He joined Moore as assistant principal in 2015. His previous experience includes being director of a gifted and talented program and coordinator of summer school programs at a school district in Columbia, Mo.; head of school at the Academy Hill School in Springfield, Mass.; and a teacher in Connecticut. In addition to his doctorate, received from Johns Hopkins University, Giessman holds a specialist degree in educational leadership from the University of Missouri, a master’s degree in environmental studies from the University of Montana, and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Harvard University.

“Jake was selected from a very strong field of internal and external candidates,” said Superintendent Xavier Botana. “He emerged as the best candidate for the job for a variety of reasons, including his experience around creating a safe and just school environment at Moore. He’s going to add tremendous value to Deering and his abilities will complement the strong leadership skills of Deering Co-Principals Dr. Abdullahi  Ahmed and Alyson Dame.”

A former Deering vice principal, Moses has filled the interim assistant principal job at Deering for the past two years. “We are most grateful to Jim for stepping in and providing steady leadership during a transitional period for Deering,” Botana said.

Details on Lyman Moore Middle School’s process for permanently filling the assistant principal position at that school will be forthcoming, Botana said. That position is currently held on an acting basis by Pamela Otunnu, who moved from her job as a math and ELL teacher at Deering High School to take over the Moore role earlier this year.
