Mohamed Kilani, a Spanish teacher intern at Lincoln Middle School, was recognized April 1 as a Preservice Teacher of the Year at the Educators Rising Conference hosted by Thomas College in Waterville.

Kilani and Ivy Robinson, a student teacher at Jonesport Elementary School, were both selected as Preservice Teacher of the Year, said Dr. Katie Rybakova, an associate professor of education at the college. Each received $1,000 for their future classrooms, Rybakova said.

There were 20 applications of seniors in a teacher preparation program across Maine for the inaugural award, which was judged by Maine County and State Teachers of the Year. Successful candidates had to have a passion for teaching, a drive for self-improvement, strong communication skills and adaptability.

The judges praised Kilani, who has been working with Lincoln Spanish teacher Sheila Conlan since January, for his teaching skills. Their comments included:

"Mohamed's lived experiences and passion contribute to his intentional and thoughtful planning as an educator who recognizes the importance of inclusivity and cultural responsiveness."

“Kilani's work with anti-racism, bridging intercultural relationships, and restorative practices is remarkable. All students (and colleagues) will benefit from the classroom culture he creates.”

“Mohamed’s diverse background and his passion for language justice stood out to me. Evidence of his commitment to diversity and inclusion are evidenced in his Multi-lingual Mainers project, and his desire for continued professional learning for his colleagues and himself are evidenced in his initiating the “Problems and Practices” seminar.”

Kilani describes himself as a multilingual Iraqi-American who is a 2021 graduate of Bowdoin College with a degree in education and Hispanic studies.
