Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS) music students have released their first virtual concert of the 2020-2021 school year. Their “Autumn EP Extravaganza” can be accessed through YouTube.

PATHS students and music program instructor Victoria Stubbs encourage everyone to take some time to relax, listen and enjoy the music. Listen HERE

Stubbs provided the following information about how the virtual concert came into being, despite the constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic:

In September, each of the 28 students in the program was assigned to two different small-group combos, for a total of 19. Throughout the first quarter, they collaborated, using online software. A free sound-editing program called Soundtrap made these productions from home possible. It is a kind of social network for musicians. Students learned how to make music with others they have never met face-to-face, regardless of geographical constraints.

Making music virtually is never as good as live music making, but our experience these past weeks has proved to us that it can still bring people together when they can’t be near each other, and offer them a way to process and communicate emotion.

The biggest thing is hope. Someday we all hope that we can play together again and keep making music. And that is really important to have in our lives right now. Music is constant in its commitment to responding to reality that can be altered by song and storytelling – synchronous or asynchronous! We hope you enjoy our gift to you during these crazy times.

We look forward to offering a Winter EP and a Spring EP.
