Painting for a Purpose (PFP) is a group of artists who paint whimsical wooden items-such as lobsters, birds and fish. They sell these items to raise money for a philanthropy fund for service learning projects led by Portland Public Schools students who want to make a difference. Students receive up to $500 to put their idea into action. Learn about grants given out recently to Longfellow and Lyseth students:

Painting For a Purpose has awarded $500 to fifth-graders at Longfellow Elementary School towards their project of “Science on the Playground.”  While playing outside, fifth-grade students got interested in all the bugs they saw around them. This led to a discussion and research about ladybugs. Students made posters and did a presentation for their class. They decided they wanted to put up a kiosk about what they learned outside so others could also learn. Information on the kiosk will be changed and updated by interested students.

Fifth-graders at Lyseth Elementary School received a Painting for a Purpose grant for $328.12 to make their school more welcoming as part of the “Welcoming Pineapple” Project. The school is in the middle of a construction project and the SHINE Mural that used to welcome students in the front of the school is gone. A theme of the Civil Rights Team at Lyseth is to Welcome All People and the students felt that with the new blank and bare walls, the school needed to look more welcoming. Students will design and paint a mural to welcome students to their school.
