Painting for a Purpose has awarded a $500 grant to students at Lyseth Elementary School to purchase outdoor mitts so they can continue doing artwork outdoors.

Students in teacher Sheila Hayward’s class and art teacher Katie West's class collaborated to write this grant. The students love the outdoor learning opportunities that have expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic. They recognize that proper equipment will make the experience a better and safer one for all art students.

The students have had the opportunity to combine art making with being outdoors in nature and they hope to keep doing that post COVID. Different classes plan to share their learning through artwork to send a message to a wider audience about the power of learning outdoors. The students are leaders in this outdoor learning effort in the district and want to show others that it can be done.

Painting for a Purpose (PFP) is a group of artists who paint whimsical wooden items-such as lobsters, birds and fish. They sell these items to raise money for a philanthropy fund for service learning projects led by Portland Public Schools students who want to make a difference. Students receive up to $500 to put their idea into action.
