To settle a bet he lost – and to benefit a local children’s hospital – Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling will shave his head on Friday, Feb. 16. The event will take place at 2:15 p.m. at Presumpscot Elementary School.

Strimling bet Lance Prator, the mayor of Portland, Pennsylvania, that the New England Patriots would defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. The Patriots lost – the score was 41-33 – so Strimling must now pay up. He had promised to give Prator Maine lobster and local craft beer – and to shave his head.

Strimling is not eager to lose his hair but said, “A bet is a bet.” And he has decided to turn a negative into a positive: He has promised on Facebook that anyone who donates more than $100 to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center will have an opportunity to help shear his locks.

Strimling chose Presumpscot as the location for his head-shaving because students at the school had previously been in contact with Mayor Prator to learn more about that other Portland. And Strimling hopes that students learn lessons from his experience.

“I hope they learn about turning lemons into lemonade,” the mayor said. “And of course about the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital and all the good work it does.”

Portland Superintendent Xavier Botana said there’s another lesson he’d like students to take away from the event. “We’re grateful to the mayor for teaching our students that gambling does not pay,” Botana said.
