Lyman Moore Middle School’s sixth- and seventh-grade math teams both earned first place at separate competitions Jan. 21!

The sixth-grade team competed at the Southern Maine Elementary Math League regional meet on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland. Competing on the team were Archer Akers, Owen Blades, Colin Haigh, Isaac Johnson, Lilly Prue and Ethan Sweeney.

In the individual award category, Archer and Colin tied for second place, while Ethan placed fifth.

“Our sixth-grade math team continues to grow as they challenge themselves in our weekly practices. I'm proud to work with them and celebrate the team's success," said math consultant Zachary Brown, who is filling in as coach this year while the team’s regular coach is on leave.

In a home meet on that same day, the seventh-grade math team placed first out of 21 teams in the second meet of the year. Jamie Akers, Lucas Milliken, Cedar Levin, Jojo Philbrook, Yiyang Liu and Ronan Mas were the members competing on the winning team.

Ronan placed second overall and Yiyang placed third overall.

“This is the team’s first win of the year and the students are working hard to continue being competitive in the remaining two meets,” said team coach Colin Lemont, who teaches seventh-grade math.
