The Portland Public Schools’ Multilingual & Multicultural Center will join other nonprofits and the Maine Association of Nonprofits on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at the 14th annual Maine Nonprofit Day at the State House in Augusta. The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Hall of Flags.

Nonprofit Day provides an opportunity for nonprofits and government to assert their commitment to working together to creatively, efficiently and effectively serve the people of Maine.

The Maine Association of Nonprofits says a large number of great nonprofits apply to participate in the annual event and it has the difficult task of selecting a diverse slate of organizations. This year marks the first time the Multilingual & Multicultural Center has been selected and the center’s director, Grace Valenzuela, said it is pleased to participate.

“It is an honor to represent the Multilingual & Multicultural Center by participating in Nonprofit Day at the State House through our partnership with the Maine Association of Nonprofits,” Valenzuela said. “We see this invitation as a vote of confidence in our work to help our newcomer students learn English and succeed academically in their school work through our extended learning programs within the Portland Public Schools.”

The Portland Public Schools is Maine’s largest and most diverse school district. The district’s Multilingual & Multicultural Center oversees language acquisition for English Language Learner (ELL) students. Its programs and services include Make It Happen!, an extended learning program for English Language Learners in grades 8-12; Parent Community Specialists, who provide outreach and services for ELL families; professional development for Portland Public Schools staff; and a robust World Language program, which in 2014 launched Maine's first public Spanish Immersion Program at Lsyeth Elementary School.

The Maine nonprofit sector is a major economic engine, employing one out of every six Mainers. Maine's nonprofit sector paid more than $4.3 billion in wages in 2015, or 17.5 percent of the state's total payroll. These wages translated into an estimated $264 million of personal income tax revenue for Maine's state and local governments. Nonprofit Day at the State House seeks to educate lawmakers on this critical piece of our economy and celebrate the importance of the work of exhibitors.

The nonprofit organizations exhibiting at the event are:
