Portland Adult Education’s ESOL5 classes have spent the fall semester studying the community of Portland, including the city’s history, environment and cultural traditions.  As the culminating event, students wrote reports showing how their new home compares with the place where they grew up.

An exhibit of their reports is on display at Portland Adult Education (PAE), located at 14 Locust St., through Thursday, Dec. 13.  Students compared Portland’s weather, food, dance, history, geography, music, public transportation and marriage customs to those of their home communities.

One report compares the price of buying 100 camels as a dowry in Djibouti to the average cost of weddings in the U.S.  Another report compares Portland’s signature dish of lobster to Oaxacan mole.  A third report compares contra dancing to semba, a dance popular in Luanda, Angola.

The exhibit can be seen in the school’s basement during regular school hours.

Students put on a showcase event at the school on Dec. 3 and 4, presenting their reports to other classes and invited guests.  The showcase gave students an opportunity to hone their skills in public speaking.
