The COVID-19 crisis didn’t derail Portland Adult Education’s New Mainer Teller Training program, which launched in January. The program successfully transitioned to remote learning and held a virtual commencement ceremony for 14 graduates early in April. Three of the graduates had already been hired as bank tellers, with hourly wages ranging from $15-17.60 per hour, with benefits.

PAE partnered with six banks and credit unions to offer the program, which was designed to provide foreign-trained professionals with financial services backgrounds the opportunity to re-enter their field in the United States. The program benefits financial institutions by providing them with a diverse pool of trained tellers with a wealth of prior experience as potential employees.

The partnership included Portland Adult Education, the New Mainers Resource Center, six banks and credit unions, ProsperityME, the Center for Financial Training & Education Alliance, and the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce. The participating financial institutions were: Bank of America (BOA), Bangor Savings Bank, cPort Credit Union, Gorham Savings Bank, Infinity Federal Credit Union and Norway Savings Bank.

Representatives from financial institutions helped build the curriculum and lent their expertise as team-teachers with PAE instructors. The 12-week, 165-hour program consisted of six courses: Today’s Teller (an American Banking Association designed curriculum), Customer Service, Computer Skills and Business Writing, Basic Math and Cash Handling, Personal Finance and Job Search Strategies.

The program launched Jan. 6 and ran through April 3. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Portland Public Schools had to close all its buildings in mid-March and switch to remote learning. But PAE Assistant Director Elizabeth Love was able to report at graduation time: “While the world has changed significantly the past few weeks, we are proud to share that our New Mainer Teller Training Program successfully transitioned to a remote learning model.”

The April 9 commencement ceremony was held via Zoom. PAE Project Coordinator Bridget Kahn said, “Our virtual graduation was a success! We had 75 attendees.”

One graduate was hired by Bangor Savings Bank and another by Infinity Credit Union, Kahn said. The third graduate was hired by another bank currently outside of the partnership, she said.

Love said PAE hopes to run a second in-person class in January 2021.

The New Mainer Teller Training program was a factor in PAE winning a Portland Regional Chamber Imagine Portland Collaborator Award earlier this year.
