Lydia Stein, a senior at Portland High School who plays soccer, basketball, and lacrosse, has been selected by Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) as a Finalist for its Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship program. Stein was selected by PCA for her leadership, sportsmanship, and commitment to making herself, her teammates and the game better.

PCA is a national nonprofit dedicated to helping young people build the character, leadership, grit, resilience, and compassion they need to thrive today. PCA’s Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship program “recognizes high school seniors who do sports right, making themselves, their teammates, and the game better. Lydia is one of 15 New England Finalists for 2020-2021. PCA will honor the 15 at a special Zoom meeting on Oct. 5 so they can connect and share experiences with one another and with members of the Board of PCA. Later this fall, PCA will select four scholarship winners.

Beth O’Neill Maloney, the Regional Director of PCA in New England, who reviewed Lydia’s application, read her references, and interviewed her, said, “Lydia impressed me with her thoughtfulness and caring. Her favorite sports moment was not a moment of personal glory, but the day her younger sister joined her on the field for her first varsity game.”

Maloney continued: “Lydia is a natural leader, who, during COVID, has undertaken coursework on leadership. She earned high praise from her soccer coach, Curtis Chapin, who genuinely appreciates her ideas and ability to communicate, saying they have helped elevate the team and that he is ‘a better coach because of her. I have had some exceptional players but she is one of the best at communication and doing what is best for everyone on our team.’”

Maloney added, “Lydia has drawn important life lessons from sports, and exemplifies what it means to be a Triple-Impact Competitor.”

Current high school juniors can apply for a Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship between Jan. 1 and May 31, 2021. Applications and more information can be found at: www.positivecoach.org/our-awards/triple-impact-competitor-scholarships/
